Why do I need an Organic Mattress and Pad?
It's very simple, most mattresses are laden with toxic chemicals. I mean obviously they don't kill most babys, or they would be banned, but if they only harm them chronically, then they are allowed to exist and be sold.
Unfortunately, evidence has been mounting for 6 decades, that the toxic chemicals found in mattresses and pads, is harming babys.
How does it harm them?
Babys have a higher respiratory rate then adults, so they are breathing in the toxic fumes at a higher rate. They have very good livers and kidneys at birth, so this portects them some, but it overworks their system at the expense of other processes that should be occurring, like rapid learning, developing their skills.
So what are these chemicals?
Traditionally you will find fire retardents, petroleum in the form of polyester, urethanes often used in waterproofing, and very toxic PVC (another petroleum product that is banned in most baby products).
A 2011 study conducted by Clean and Healthy New York, an organization promoting safer environments, reported that of the 190 crib mattresses investigated, 72% contained one or more chemicals that have been linked to health risks.
Even worse, many companies are less than honest about the mattress ingredients. In fact, I have a written letter from one company that tried to tell me the polyester was organic. People seem to be grossly misinformed.
What can I do?
Purchase an organic mattress and pad made with organic latex, pure untreated wools, organic cottons. These can be combined to make a pure mattress and pad that is naturally dust mite, mold, bacteria and fire resistant.
